    WW1 TRENCH ART VASE.
    EMBOSSED OAK DESIGN WITH "SILLERY " INSCRIPTION IN AN EMBOSSED RECTANGLE: "
    SOUVENIR DE SILLERY".
    IN FRENCH AND  PARTICULARLY IN THIS CONTEXT, "SOUVENIR" MEANS "REMEMBRANCE/ IN MEMORY OF."
    SILLERY IS A VILLAGE IN THE MARNE/ CHAMPAGNE REGION OF FRANCE; IT WAS THE LOCATION OF A FORTIFICATION DURING WW1:
    "THE FORT DE LA POMPELLE,"
    BUILT AS A SUPPORTING POSITION FOR LARGER FORTS,  BUT DISARMED IN 1913. THE SILLERY FORT  SAW THE HEAVIEST FIGHTING OF THE CHAMPAGNE / REIMS REGION AND WAS DESTROYED. TO THIS DAY, IT REMAINS IN A STATE OF RUIN.
